The Autism Advisory and Support Service (AASS) is hosting an ultra-inclusive event this September in order to promote understanding and acceptance for those living on the Autism Spectrum, their friends, family and community. The LOTS (Living On The Spectrum) Family Gala Day promises to be a fun-filled spectacular of activities, entertainment and play, spreading a deeper message to the wider community that different is not less, just different.

Here’s what you need to know about the LOTS (Living On The Spectrum) Family Gala Day, and the amazing work the AASS does for those living on the Autism Spectrum, day in, day out.

Who are the Autism Advisory and Support Service?

AASS
The Autism Advisory and Support Service have so much to offer those on the Autism Spectrum and their families.

The AASS work holistically with those living on the Autism Spectrum and their families to ensure that everyone receives the support they need; not only the individual with the diagnosis. They encourage and empower families through lived experience—leveraging the day-to-day realities of what team members with an Autism diagnosis face, as well as the experiences of those closest to them.

The AASS use a variety of platforms to educate and garner understanding about the Autism Spectrum and how it uniquely impacts individuals with a diagnosis and their families. They offer a range of services; many of which are unfunded, like their advocacy and family service arms, relying on donations and grants to keep these valuable services running.

The Importance of the AASS and Family Gala Day

Events like the LOTS (Living On The Spectrum) Family Gala Day are so important to the wider cause of organisations like the AASS because they encourage inclusive engagement and meaningful interactions between typically developing individuals and individuals with diverse needs.

They also reinforce to the larger community that no two people are the same. Every individual has unique looks, natures, characteristics, brains and bodies that make us who we are—and no person is better than another because of the way they look or think.

AASS
The AASS and its services are fundamental to inclusivity.

The AASS believe that as a community as a whole, we are afraid of what we do not understand. This is why events like the LOTS (Living On The Spectrum) Family Gala Day and the AASS are so crucial to progression; they spread awareness and understanding to the community about how and why individuals are the way they are. Once we have understanding, we can then embrace each other's uniqueness.

What to Expect at the Family Gala Day

The LOTS (Living On The Spectrum) Family Gala Day promises to be an extravaganza of all-things-fun. You can expect rides, a petting zoo, food trucks, plenty of children’s entertainment (think: some of their favourite characters on stage!), a silent disco, workshops, an open mic arena, sensory zones and more!

Alongside all of these festivities, there will also be a variety of service providers hosting stalls on the day; to enable families to network, engage and connect with them about their services and the support they can offer. Additionally, a sensory toy stall will enable people to purchase relevant resources on the day.

The Details

The LOTS (Living On The Spectrum) Family Gala Day is a free event held on the 10th of September 2022 at Sydney Olympic Park, but the AASS ask that people intending to attend register for the event online. See you there!
