Coomaditchie: The Art of Place

Full of loving and lyrical artworks, which include paintings, ceramics and screen-prints, Coomaditchie: The Art of Place showcases the strong history of activism carried out by the Coomaditchie community, including campaigning for housing and fighting for Aboriginal rights, highlighted through colourful contemporary art.

‘A cut-and-paste, punked-up look at my Country’ is how Peter Waples-Crowe describes his five-minute video installation Ngaya (I am), a self-portrait of the artist as a queer Ngarigo person from the Snowy Mountains region of south-eastern NSW. Mixing images of people and landscape with song and dance – and humour – this compelling video installation explores the multiple identities of Waples-Crowe, who was adopted and raised in the Illawarra region on the NSW South Coast and later reconnected with his Ngarigo heritage.

FREE School Holiday Activities

With FREE drop-in activities inspired by the tireless campaigning of Coomaditchie residents for access to housing, kids are invited to think about a cause they feel strongly about and create a thought-provoking badge to take home. Using symbols or words, they can design a badge for a cause of their choice that brings these feelings to life.

Kids can also try their hand at creating their own postcard in response to Coomaditchie: The Art of Place.  Do you have a special connection to a place in Australia? Capture your impressions of this place on a blank postcard using the coloured pencils provided.

Coinciding with Ngaya (I am), by Peter Waples-Crowe who uses collage extensively in his work, in this workshop run by the Sydney Collage Society, use the materials provided to create an artwork that captures your identity. This might include your appearance, beliefs, interests, likes and dislikes. Experiment with pictures, words and symbols that demonstrate what makes you unique.

Materials supplied, suitable for all ages.
