Who doesn’t love a good milkshake? We’ve come a long way since the old fake syrup mixed through a glass of milk days. These days a good milkshake is an experience.

If you’re trying to impress your kids this weekend, why not suggest going out for a good old-fashioned shake? And then step up your game by taking them for one of these.

Little Loco

Choose from fancy concoctions like the Orea shake or the Mint Slice shake (yes please!). And if shakes aren’t your thing you can also get a divine breakfast here.

When: Daily, 6:30am to 5pm

Where: 121 Merthyr Road, New Farm

More info: Little Loco Facebook page

Gelato Messina

It follows that the best gelataria in town is going to make great shakes, right? They rotate their flavours regularly so come on in and see what they’ve got. We promise you won’t leave disappointed.

When: Daily, 12pm to 10pm (later on busy nights)

Where: 109 Melbourne Street, South Brisbane

More info: Gelato Messina website

Milk Café and Milk Bar

If you like your shakes loaded with crazy extras, this is the place to be. You can find delish flavours like butterscotch, frozen custard, choc-coconut, s’mores, and loads more – and they’re all next level! Don’t visit before dinner if you expect your kids to eat their veggies – these things are a meal in themselves.

When: Monday – Friday 7am to 4pm, Weekends 7am to 3pm

Where: 16 Ashgrove Avenue, Ashgrove

More info: Milk Café website

Cowch

Cowch is purely a dessert bar, so you know they know about milkshakes. Their super shakes serve 2-4 people so if you can convince your kids to share (hopefully with you too), these epic delights are the way to go. Loaded shakes are made with a range of crazy ingredients that will have your kids’ eyes popping out of their heads, from chocolate ganache and waffles to strawberry coulis and fairy floss. *Gasp*

When: Sunday – Thursday 7am to 10pm, Friday – Saturday 7am to midnight

Where: 179 Grey Street, South Brisbane

More info: Cowch website

Miss Kay’s Burger Bar

Miss Kay’s are known for their awesome burgers but try to save some room for a classic milkshake with some mad toppings such as chocolate shake topped with brownies, salted caramel shake topped with popcorn, and peanut butter milkshakes topped with peanut butter cups. Shut up and take our money.

When: Exact hours vary from store to store but all are open for lunch and dinner. See website for more details.

Where: Brisbane CBD, Mitchelton and Springwood (see website for more details)
