Stay Warm And Have Fun This Winter At Sutherland Leisure Centre

By Hayley Dean, ellaslist

It’s now officially winter in Sydney as the cold, cold air from the snowy mountains makes its way into the city. Yet, ask my 4 year old what fun adventure he’d like to go on today and without hesitation, he will tell you “let's go swimming!”. Thank goodness for Sutherland Leisure Centre.

As the name suggests, Sutherland Leisure Centre is located in the southern Sydney suburb of Sutherland, around 30mins drive from the Inner West and is one of four centres managed by the Sutherland Shire council.

Open 7 days a week, the facility is a wonderful family fun day out, even in the middle of winter, thanks to the cosy high 20’s air temp and heated indoor pools maintained through out the centre. For me, this means I can relax knowing my little ones won’t be shivering endlessly outside the water and we all appreciate the more comfortable they are, they happier everyone is!

Speaking of warmth, unlike many other popular aquatic centres, Sutherland Leisure Centre has heated pools galore! Check out these facilities:

  • 50-metre heated outdoor pool
  • Heated outdoor utility pool
  • Heated indoor children's play area/pool
  • Heated indoor 25-metre pool
  • Spa
  • Steam room

As you can see in the photo, the heated indoor children’s play area is truly fun for young kids. They have (amongst others) mushroom showers, buckets and sprinklers and a dedicated toddlers pool. And for those who might be a little nervous or don’t have enough arms or eyes on the back of your head, aquatic inflatables are available and of course fantastic swimming classes (it's never too early to start learning water confidence!)

The pool also has a Giant Water Inflatable that appears at various times throughout the year, including winter! It’s an absolute local favourite and very popular during school holidays. Be sure to follow the centre's Facebook page to find up when its next “popping up”.

And for the parents, onsite parking (such a bonus to find this) and café and a massage therapist – um yes please! If you’re keen for a bit of a work out, pop the wee ones into the trusted crèche for some child minding (only $4 per session) then choose from the weights, cardio or aerobic rooms or, in fact, any of the over 200 classes they have on offer each week.

Oh and mums to be (again?), they even have a pre-natal 6 week fitness program! It looks great especially as it’s on twice a week in the evenings. Monday night class is indoor aqua to take the pressure off your joints, ease back pain and increase circulation and on Wednesday its yoga / fitball combination to help with keeping your fitness levels up. This specially tailored program run by qualified instructors is perfect for those in the 2nd and 3rd trimesters. Then, once baby arrives, ease back into exercise with their 6 week post-natal program run by qualified trainers who will gently guide you through. Books are essential.

For those who may require additional assistance, rest assured the centre is very access friendly; with an indoor pool hoist, aqua wheel chairs, ramp access for entry and exit of centre and pool, change room facilities and hand railings support.

Finally, some exciting news for this Summer: work has recently commenced on their $1.5 million dollar water fun park, work is expected to be ready by October 2018! We cannot wait for the to open. Looks brilliant.

So stay warm and have some serious aquatic fun this winter at Sutherland Leisure Centre, and send in your photos so we share the joy!
