The Sydney Aquarium in Darling Harbour always guarantees a great day out and hours of fun for kids of all ages. You’ll find the world’s largest collection of all-Aussie aquatic animals, including sharks, penguins, giant rays, tropical fish, turtles, dugongs, crocodiles, platypus, sea dragons and more. Featuring three oceanariums, 90 tanks and over 12,000 different animals and a daily activity schedule including penguin feeding. You’ll also find a good cafe, and an excellent gift shop. For full details of what’s on when you visit see the Sydney Aquarium Website.

Ellaslist Opinion: Sydney Aquarium is excellent for mums and bubs, all areas are easily accessed with a pram and even the tiniest baby enjoys gazing at the creatures behind the glass. Toddlers have plenty of room to run and explore (especially on weekdays) and pre-schoolers and up love trying to find Nemo and discovering other fish and sea creatures they recognise. An annual pass offers great value-at $90, it pays for itself in less then 3 visits and includes yearly entry to some other great family destinations. Beware of all the merchandise-easy to spend a fortune on your way out but the main gift shop does stock some very good quality sea themed books and toys. Highly recommended for a great family outing, especially on a rainy day!

Admission: Adult $35.00 Child (3+) $18.00. Annual Pass (including entry to Wildlife World, Sydney Tower and Manly Oceanworld) Adult $90.00, Child $63.00.

Facilities: There are baby change facilities at Sydney Aquarium and all areas are accessible with a pram. There is an onsite café-fine for the basics but they don’t offer great deal of healthy options for kids.

Getting There: The Aquarium is a 5–10 minute walk from CBD down Market St,

Monorail: Disembark the monorail at Darling Park station, Light Rail: Disembark the light rail at either the Convention or Pyrmont Bay stations, Train: A short walk from Town Hall station Ferry: Disembark at Aquarium Pier Bus: Sydney Explorer bus stop no 24. Discounted parking available at 3 Secure Parking Stations in the area.

Places to visit nearby: Wildlife World, Darling Harbour, Chinese Gardens, Australian National Maritime Museum

    Aquarium & Wildlife World

I took my 3 year old and two friends this week and they LOVED it. It’s worth going just for the lego exhibition – the shark, whale & mermaid were incredible. Another highlight was the clown fish – the girls all cried “there’s elmo!”.

It would have cost $50 for me to go to both venues (and free for under 4) but I bought a one year pass for me for $80 which is unlimited entry in to these two venues + ocean world in manly, Sydney Tower and two other places I haven’t heard of. Look forward to lots of adventures over Winter.

    Make a day of it

The Aquarium is on the pricey side but we have been there a few times now using vouchers we have come across in guide books, shop a dockets, or the Entertainment Book, which eases the pain of such a high entry fee.

The kids love it though, racing from one exhibit to the next. If you’re there at the right time you get to feed the dugongs which is a treat. There are also some fun interactive/powerhouse museum-style activities in a kids area there.

The food on offer is complete junk though so we always take our own and have a wander around outside afterwards.

Street parking on the weekend is also really cheap.

Try getting through the gift shop/Exit without buying a souvenir!

    Aquarium

As apartment dwellers, my 2 year old, 8 month old and I need as many outings to fill our week as possible to save us going stir crazy-especially in rainy weather. The Aquarium is perfect to fill a morning or afternoon. On weekdays during school term it is pretty quiet so when Joe was crawling, he had free rein to zip around the long corridors and now he is perfect height to peer in all the tanks. We got a crazy internet deal for an annual pass and got great use out of it but I think it is a bit dear to splash out on a single full price entry. Keep an eye out for specials-even on the Aquarium’s own website they run promotions from time to time.

We think the Sydney aquarium is a great day out if a little on the expensive side, so go early and get as much out of the day as you can. Good thing is that kids under 3 are free. if you book online you can save 10%. Or buy the explore 4 pass for $49.99 for adults and $29.99 for kids. That gives you free entry for 1 visit to 4 Sydney attractions including The Aquarium, Wildlife World, the observation deck at Skytower and Ocean World in Manly. It’s valid for 3 months from first attraction entry.
